Dr. Upton Allen
Division Head,
SickKids Hospital

Dr. Upton D. Allen is a physician leader, infectious disease expert, and scientist at SickKids, as well as a Professor at the University of Toronto. Among his numerous awards, he is a recipient of the Order of Ontario. Dr. Allen is currently researching various aspects of the COVID pandemic. Within the Black Canadian communities in Ontario, he is leading studies addressing COVID-19 antibody testing and associated risk profiles as well as immune responses to COVID-19 vaccines.

Michele James
VP, Scarborough Health Network

Michele’s portfolio includes oversight of human resources for the hospital’s 5200 employees and executive leadership for workplace health and safety,  diversity, inclusion and health equity; and strategy and transformation.  As a volunteer, Michele serves as Chair of the Board of Governors for Durham College and  chairs the Advisory Committee for the Black Physicians Association of Ontario. Michele was selected as one of the 100 Accomplished Black Canadian Women for 2020. 

Nicole Welch,
Chief Nursing Office and COVID-19 Liaison Director, Toronto Public Health

Nicole has worked for Toronto Public Health for 20 years in numerous nursing roles and is currently the Chief Nursing Office and COVID-19 Liaison Director. Nicole’s passion for ongoing learning has led her to the final stages of her pursuant of a PhD degree in Applied Psychology and Human Development at the University of Toronto’s Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. She is passionate about issues related to health equity, social justice and to supporting the development and maintenance of healthy communities.
