Talented students receive the Robert K. Brown and Dr. Gervan Fearon Scholarships

SCARBOROUGH, ON – October 2, 2020 – Tropicana Community Services Organization (Tropicana) is excited to announce the winners of its annual scholarships.

Tropicana’s Scholarship Committee selected two outstanding candidates to receive the Robert K. Brown and Dr. Gervan Fearon scholarships.

The Robert K. Brown Scholarship was launched on May 6, 2000 as part of Tropicana’s 20th anniversary celebrations. Throughout its history, Tropicana has been a catalyst for human and social development. The scholarship is named after the organization’s co-founder and supports those who have made a commitment to the betterment of the community at large. The 2020 Robert K. Brown scholarship recipient is Elijah Gyansa.

The Dr. Gervan Fearon Scholarship was launched in 2017 for students pursuing a postgraduate degree. Dr. Fearon is an advocate for post-secondary education, and in particular graduate studies, because of the need for research and action plans aimed at addressing opportunities and challenges that currently face our communities. He believes that through education and research, opportunities can be created and nurtured for the betterment of individuals, communities, and society. The Dr. Gervan Fearon 2020 scholarship recipient is Miya Kagan- Cassidy.

“The energy, passion and talent these students bring to their academic experience set them apart as true leaders,” said Raymund Guiste, Executive Director, Tropicana Community Services Organization. “These two young individuals demonstrate great potential in leading the next generation and making a difference in our community and the world.”

The scholarships enable youth from the Greater Toronto Area to continue their education at the university and college level. Tropicana has a long-standing history of service to the local community, and these scholarships help support those who exhibit the same commitment.

On September 23, 2020, Tropicana held its first virtual-only Annual General Meeting. The event was held online as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and in accordance with public health recommendations around public gatherings and social distancing. In addition to a review of the business of the organization for FY2019-2020, Claudette McGowan, Global Executive Officer at TD Bank – Canada delivered a keynote to members on digital transformation and the not-for- profit sector. The 2020 scholarship winners were announced during the event.
