RE: CUPE TDSB Strike
We have received an important update from the Toronto District School Board (TDSB). The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) has announced that their members will be striking, and not be at work across the Province of Ontario on Friday, November 4, 2022. As a result of this announcement, the Board will have no choice but to close all schools on Friday.
Third-party childcare operators located in TDSB schools, like Tropicana’s Kindergarten/School-Age Childcare Centre, also known as Children of Tomorrow Childcare Centre, located at John McCrae Public School, will be permitted to remain open. However, the allowed operating hours have been adjusted to 8:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.
Our childcare centre will be open on Friday with the adjusted hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
However, if the strike continues next week, due to health and safety concerns, we will be closing our facilities.
Updates will be posted to our website, mytropicana.ca, and communicated via email.
Please visit the Toronto District School Board website at tdsb.on.ca for more information regarding the CUPE strike.
It’s important to note that the decision to open or close will be made by individual childcare operators. If you have children in other childcare facilities that would be affected by the strike, you will need to contact them directly to confirm their decision to operate and their operating hours.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Nicola Greenland, Childcare Supervisor by phone (416) 261 9893 or email: ngreenland@tropicanacommunity.org.

We are pleased to announce that our unionized employees have ratified a 3-year collective agreement today. The contract gives Tropicana the ability to sustainably offer culturally appropriate and supportive programs – today and in the future.
We want to thank the many funders, clients, partners and community at large for their unwavering support during this negotiating process. Special thanks to the employees who helped us maintain all our programs and services during the strike.
We welcome our unionized team members back to work and look forward to focusing our energies on what we all agree matters most – meeting the needs of the Caribbean, Black and African communities.

We made the decision today to part ways with a Labour Relations Consultant who was a member of our union negotiating team. This decision was based on online comments that are unacceptable to our organization and to our community.
For 40 years, Tropicana has always stood for the values of equality, respect for the individual and social responsibility. This organization will not stand by when compromise of those values come to light within our ranks. We will separate ourselves immediately. That is what we have done and we are moving forward.
We have taken steps to fill the position and are ready to return to the negotiating table at any time.

Unionized employees of Tropicana Community Services are on strike. However, we intend to continue operating all our programs during this labour disruption. Just as Tropicana has been innovative in dealing with the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are committed to being resourceful and running all our community programs to the fullest extent possible.
Our plan is to keep our administrative services and facilities, including our daycare centres, operating safely and securely. And we plan to continue delivering our virtual remote services.
Our goal is to reach an agreement with our unionized employees and bring them back to work as soon as possible, as partners with us in providing valuable services to our clients. We seek an agreement that allows Tropicana Community Services to sustainably offer culturally appropriate and supportive programs to those most in need – today and in the future.
