Tropicana Community Services, a Toronto-based multi-service organization, provides all youth, newcomers, people of Black and Caribbean heritage, and others in need with opportunities and alternatives that lead to success and positive life choices. Our mission is achieved through culturally appropriate programs such as counselling, childcare, educational, and employment services, and youth development.
Who we are looking for:
The successful candidates are responsible for assisting in the implementation and facilitation of the in-person summer camp program. The Camp Counsellor will support the Education team in the facilitation of camp programming and other camp-related activities.
What you will do:
- Plan, lead, and facilitate various camp activities, both indoors and outdoors
- Support the Education Team with the coordination and facilitation of a dynamic and fun-filled 6-week, in-person program for campers (ages 4-12)
- Assist with the implementation of a weekly schedule for assigned camp groups.
- Supervise campers in their assigned camp program areas at all times.
- Provide advice and support to other camp counsellors.
- Assist in resolving conflicts and behavioural issues with campers.
- Maintain accurate and complete attendance records of all participants.
- Advance escalated issues or incidents to the Assistant Supervisor
- Communicate with parents/guardians about campers’ experiences and report concerns.
- Be a positive role model for other Camp Counsellors and campers 4-12yrs.
- Know, enforce, and understand the Occupational Health & Safety Act.
- Ensure a safe and clean environment for activities at all times.
What you need for this role:
- Secondary or post-secondary education; students welcome
- Knowledge of African/Caribbean/Canadian history and issues faced within the Black community
- Good behavioural management skills, strong initiative, work ethic, and teamwork skills
- Sensitivity to multiculturalism and special needs
- Possession of valid First-Aid/CPR certification is considered an asset
- Negative Vulnerable Sector Check
To be qualified for this position under the Canada Summer Jobs Program, you must also:
- Be between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of the employment
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
- Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
*The youth must be 15 years of age at the beginning of the employment period. The youth may be more than 30 years of age at the end of the employment period as long as the youth was 30 at the beginning of the employment period.
**International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada. Youth awaiting a refugee status ruling, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, youth visa or work visa are ineligible.
