The Opportunity
Tropicana Community Services is looking for volunteer tutors for our Increase Your Success tutoring program. If you are a high-school student, post-secondary student, teacher, or professor (current or retired) and wish to aid us in supporting students in grades 1-12 in Mathematics, Language Arts, and Science, then this may be the role for you!
The Increase Your Success tutoring program offers academic assistance via one-on-one Zoom sessions and onsite group sessions, for Mathematics, Science, and Language Arts (English).
Reporting to: Program Manager
Location: Zoom and/or onsite at our 1385 Huntingwood Drive, Scarborough location.
Software Requirements: Microsoft Office, Zoom (if applying for Online position)
8-Week Terms:
Fall Term: October 25 – December 17
Winter Term: January 10- March 4
Spring Term: March 21- May 13
Hours:
One-on-one Online Sessions: via Zoom every Tuesday and Thursday from 4:00-5:00 p.m.
Onsite Group (6:1) Sessions: every Saturday: Math 10:00-11:00 a.m., Language Arts (English) 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., Science: 12:00-1:00 p.m.
Time Commitment
- Required to attend volunteer orientation and training
- Minimum one-term commitment for either the online tutoring (Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00pm-5:00pm) and/or onsite tutoring (Saturdays from 10:00am-1:00pm).
Areas of Responsibilities
- Support each student through a pre-assessment session, to build a learning plan tailored to their needs.
- Follow their learning plan, allowing students to learn at their own pace, and focus on any difficulty areas.
- Teach students effective study and time management techniques.
- Help with school-assigned homework
- Provide students with the support, resources, and tools that will help them achieve academic success throughout their primary and high school years and beyond.
- Build self-confidence, self-respect, and enthusiasm for education.
- Help students build strong studying and learning techniques
Skills and Qualifications
Education
- Must have minimum high school education (or in the process of completion).
- Strong knowledge in Mathematics, Language, and Science.
Work Experience
- 0-1 years of tutoring experience in Mathematics, Language, and Science (preferred)
Language & Communication Skills
- Strong communication skills in English, both oral and written
- Good presentation skills
Transferable Skills
- A self-starter who is honest, analytical, organized, and detail-oriented
- Ability to respect and value diversity and inclusion· Ability to prioritize tasks, multitask, and work in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to maintain patience when supporting students
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of the organization
- Ability to tutor via Zoom (for those applying for online tutoring)
