SNAP® BACK
Stop Now and Plan for Black, African & Caribbean Kids
Tropicana Community Services’ SNAP® BACK program is funded by the provincial initiative, Services for Black Children, Youth and Families (formerly Ontario Black Youth Action Plan), to support Black, African, and Caribbean children, ages 6–11, who have behaviours that could result in conflict at home, school or in the community. As a licenced affiliate with the Child Development Institute, Tropicana uses the evidenced-based, cognitive-behavioural SNAP® model to deliver a culturally appropriate program for the Black, African, and Caribbean community. Specifically, children struggling with behavioural issues, emotional regulation, self-control, and problem-solving skills benefit while parents enhance their strategies to support and build stronger relationships with their children.
Staff work with each family to assess challenges and develop action plans. With the goal of preventing future anti-social behaviour and reducing the chances of conflict, services include:
- Individual and family counselling to address their experiences, stressors, and challenges, including anti-Black racism, in achieving positive emotional, psychological, and social well-being.
- Crisis intervention
- 13-week SNAP® BACK Boys or Girls Groups
- 13-week SNAP® BACK Parenting Group
- School advocacy and support to educators
- Support and accompaniment to navigate systems
- Information sharing and advocacy on rights, options, and available services
