Tropicana Employment Centre (TEC)

Making a Difference

Change a life. Change the community. Change the world.

By hiring through TEC, you can provide an individual who has been struggling with social and financial barriers the opportunity to get ahead and contribute to the community. Changing not just their life, but those in their community as well. Making the act of recruitment, something that is part of the day to day of any company, a contribution to your environmental, social, and governance (ESG) plan.

The impact of unemployment

Unemployment has a big impact on an individual’s well-being. Studies found that unemployed people who received the same amount of income assistance as they earned at a job still experienced a loss of well-being. Here are some ways that unemployment affects a person’s well-being:

  • Higher stress
  • Lower self-esteem
  • Fear and anxiety about their future
  • Social isolation
  • Social stigma
  • Increased risk of problematic substance use
  • Increased risk of an ill-being or mental illness
  • Worsening symptoms of a mental illness
  • Withdrawal from the community

The importance of employment

Providing a job is more impactful than you might have believed. At TEC we witness it firsthand, but there is a great deal of research that shows working can be an important part of an individual’s overall well-being. Some of the benefits of work include:

  • Financial stability
  • Quality of life
  • Social interaction
  • Social support
  • Sense of personal achievement
  • A sense of structure and purpose
  • A sense of status and identity
  • Better mental health
  • The ability to support others and the community

Employment and the community

The price of unemployment to a community is about more than money—it affects the entire community including:

  • A lower quality of life
  • Lack/disinterest in social and community activities
  • Rising health problems—a Canadian study found that heart disease, suicide, and mental health issues go up when unemployment rises
  • A weaker overall economy

Working with us to staff your job openings goes beyond recruitment, it also contributes towards fulfilling your company’s charitable and community initiatives. Together TEC and your company can make a difference that goes beyond employing one or more people but impacts our community and the city as well.
